Research states that only 27% of students with developmental disabilities in America had been in postsecondary school three to five years once they had graduated from high school (Kushner, Maldonado, Pack & Hooper, 2011). This number could increase if students with developmental disabilities were provided with more service and information in schools on post-secondary education. These services could be provided by specialized school counselors in the high schools. Counselors should be provided with more specialized education in working with students who have developmental disabilities.
