First Love: Attachment Theory Training for the General Public

From our first moment of life until our last, we are designed to have a primary bond of love with another human being. This begins with our primary caregiver, usually our mother, and extends to the significant other that we seek as adults. The aggressive scientific study of human attachment over the last 60 plus years is developing into a specialized field of understanding and treatment for the emotional and attachment needs of our population. This paper and accompanying presentation will discuss the origins of Attachment Theory along with the categories of attachment styles. I will conclude by briefly covering the treatments and theory of Emotion-Focused Therapy and the Circle of Security program.
