Creating Safe and Inclusive School Environments for Gay, Lesbian, and Bisexual Students

Gay, lesbian, and bisexual (GLB) youth face unique challenges in school environments. These challenges may be due to overt discrimination or harassment from peers and staff, or from a systemic lack of awareness regarding GLB issues. Such discrimination, harassment, and lack of awareness may negatively affect GLB students‘ personal/social, academic, and career development, the three areas of student growth on which school counselors focus. This paper reviews the current literature available on the topic and proposes strategies that the professional school counselor can employ to address the challenges faced by GLB students in order to create a safe and inclusive school environment for this population.
