To critically examine current challenges in professional ethics and boundaries, examining areas of challenge, and provide concrete tools for decision-making which can bring about good clinical outcomes while avoiding pitfalls. Through case examples as well as ethical challenges provided by attendees, a variety of gray areas and dilemmas will be utilized to formulate ways to avoid trouble while producing good outcomes. Gary R. Schoener, M.Eq., LP, is a clinical psychologist who is Director of Training & Consultation of the Walk-In Counseling Center in Minneapolis which he directed for 37 years. The center is the only recipient of the Gold Achievement Award in Hospital & Community Psychiatry in the upper Midwest. Gary consults & lectures internationally and was the 2010 H.B. Williams traveling professor of psychiatry of the Royal Australian & New Zealand College of Psychiatrists. He is also the recipient of the Bernie Belling Ethics Award from MARRCH. He is the author of many publications and frequently serves as an expert witness in cases involving professional ethics & boundaries. He also does individualized remedial boundaries coaching of professionals under referral from licensure boards and employers.
